Words Out Loud embraces the onset of winter with the theme of “cold comfort” but be assured of a warm reception at our June edition.
Wordsmiths are invited to explore the theme or simply ignore it altogether.
I first sat down to write this month’s blog post at 1:16pm on the 28th of April. I don’t know when you’re reading it, but if you look at the top of this webpage, you can see the date that it was posted.
Words Out Loud is “ticking the boxes” for our May edition.
Wordsmiths are invited to warm up for the federal election, go left field or simply ignore the theme altogether.
This is a great opportunity to road test new material, celebrate a success or share some inspiration, or simply enjoy a diverse range of spoken word — poetry, prose or storytelling; read or recited; your own work or someone else’s. Performances are limited to 5 minutes each. Sign up on the night.
Words Out Loud is “hopping to it” for our Easter Thursday edition.
Wordsmiths are invited to respond to the theme — or ignore it altogether.

In 2015 I joined Ballarat Writers, convinced I was on the path to writing success. I was in the first year of my degree and I felt like I was finally following my heart. That year I entered two competitions, the Southern Cross Short Story Competition (BWI’s very own competition) and the Brotherhood of St Laurence’s Hope Prize. I paid my money and I took my chances.
Needless to say, I didn’t win.
We thought you all might like to know about a local event that features one of our local writers.
On Thursday March 14, 2019, Maryrose Cuskelly and Maryanne Ross will be at the Bridge Mall Collins bookstore in Ballarat. Starting at 6:30pm, the two crime writers will be in conversation about Maryrose’s true crime book, Wedderburn.
Words Out Loud is looking for balance at its March edition, drawing on the grand confluence of the equinox, Harmony Day and World Poetry Day!
Wordsmiths are invited to respond to the theme of “all things in balance” — or ignore it altogether.

I’ve just finished writing a play. Bells and whistles notwithstanding, the overwhelming feeling is one of apprehension. And that’s because the completion of a playscript is more of an abandonment than anything else.
It’s that time of year again! Our AGM will be held on Wednesday February 13 at the Bunch of Grapes hotel from 7pm. The outgoing committee will be there early to gather feedback and ideas, and to answer questions from those who might be interested in building Ballarat Writers into something bigger and better.
To speed up the proceedings, we are making our position reports available prior to the meeting. This will save us the need to have our usual read through on the night.
Words Out Loud is sharing its heart in February, no strings attached, with the non-compulsory theme of “heart strings”. Make of that theme what you will, or ignore it altogether.
